One of our first international cultural relations projects was an exhibition in Manila called “SUSI: Key to Chinese Art Today”. A series of exhibitions supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Philippines, and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of the Philippines, “SUSI” comprised three exhibitions of Chinese art. “Exploration and Discovery: An exhibition of Modern Chinese Oil Painting” examined the persistence of realism as a dominant style in modern Chinese painting, and was held at the National Museum of the Philippines. “Future and Fantasy: An exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Art”, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, showcased the work of some of China’s most acclaimed contemporary artists. “A Brush with China”, an exhibition of traditional ink and calligraphy was held at the Yuchengco Museum. Together, these three exhibits featured more than 120 art objects, and provided Filipino audiences a comprehensive view of art from China.
